The “at Home” invitation is a centuries' old social convention to invite friends and acquaintances to what might have been called a soirée in the 1800s but which we now just call drinks or supper. Usually sent by the lady of the house, they are a hangover from the days when a hostess would let it be known when she would be at home to receive visitors.
